Position: Project Coordinator

Location: The position requires the individual to be based at Bengaluru, but will involve considerable travel to the specific field sites in coastal Tamil Nadu. Accommodation and stay in the field sites will be at very modest field stations.  

Duration: One year (renewable subject to performance and availability of project funding)

Project Details:  

Some of the most problematic outcomes for coastal and marine systems are in the form of pollution  (particularly from marine debris and plastics), degradation of coastal and marine habitats, and loss of livelihoods. The proposed project aims to address these three core challenges along the Palk Bay coastline (in select coastal villages spread across 4 coastal districts) through targeted and sustained engagements at the grassroots with small-scale marine fishing communities. It involves a combination of research and  grassroots interventions on building . It focuses on empowering communities to use resources and skills sustainably while simultaneously building leadership training and sustainability entrepreneurship in fisheries. Dakshin’s context-based approach, the proposed project will pioneer on-ground activities that improve local community and environmental wellbeing through capacity-building, skill upgradation and facilitating on-ground action and partnerships. The broad areas of activity are:  

  • Scoping, needs assessment and building local networks and partnerships 
  • Participatory mapping and critical cleanup campaigns 
  • Support to coastal youth hubs to address coastal and marine degradation  
  • Harnessing ICT and design-centred messaging to support healthy ecosystems and communities  
  • Operate a Coastal Grassroots Fellowship on coastal and marine sustainability in the Palk Bay 
  • Strengthening livelihood security to ensure long-lasting sustainability impacts  

Chief responsibilities: 

We invite applications from suitable candidates for a full-time, contractual position of Project Coordinator.  Our requirement is for a dynamic and highly motivated individual who will fulfil the following responsibilities of this position:  

  1. Project management and administration, project communications, monitoring and periodic donor engagement and reporting.  
  2. Assist with the management and administration of Dakshin’s project on Recycling for Coastal Wellbeing, and facilitate coordination within the project team.
  1. Design and execute project planning, monitoring protocols and have oversight on project schedules. 
  2. Coordinate with the Programme Heads and PIs of the project for all of the above regularly.  
  3. Manage, maintain and develop websites and online communication in relation to the project and its objectives (updates for Dakshin’s newsletters, blogs, and websites).  
  4. Coordinate with print and electronic media for highlighting important issues pertaining to the project. 
  5. Assist with logistics for outreach programmes of the project 

Location: The position will be based at Bangalore but will involve considerable travel to Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts. 

Candidates with the following qualifications/skills will be preferred:  

  • Excellent demonstrable coordination and project management skills.  
  • Good ability to engage with a team of diverse persons.  
  • Ability to endure hard physical conditions in the field and ability to carry out time-bound reporting and documentation.  
  • Excellent written and presentation skills in English (editing, formatting and presentation)  
  • A master’s degree or bachelor’s degree with sufficient experience in a managerial position. 
  • Work experience of at least three to five years demonstrating independent thinking and capable execution of projects in the environment or development sector demonstrating attention to detail and planning skills.
  • A good understanding of issues related to conservation and environmental governance.  
  • Good written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Experience and ability to plan projects and work with teams. 
  • Ability to independently facilitate meetings and discussions. 
  • Spoken (and preferably written) proficiency in Tamil.  

Remuneration: Commensurate with experience and Dakshin’s internal salary scales. Outstanding and deserving candidates will be paid in the higher range of our salary scales at rates that are competitive within the sector.
